Sample question · 10 marks

Why is the rate of hydrolysis of tert-butyl bromide independent of the concentration of the nucleophile?

Eₐ R–Br + H₂O TS₁ (slow, RDS) R⁺ (planar, sp²) TS₂ (fast) R–OH + HBr REACTION COORDINATE ENERGY

Rate = k[(CH₃)₃C–Br], so first order, unimolecular.

Nucleophile attacks after the slow step, so [Nu] is absent from the rate law.

Planar R⁺ is attacked from both faces: racemisation.

How the solutions are laid out. The diagram carries the mechanism and the written lines stay short.
